Subject: cochineal pigment mixed with clear nail polish
Weather: 75º F (outside) - 70º F (indoors)
Materials:
Procedure:
Observation:
This experiment was not as successful as I imagined. The pigment did not blend completely and continued to settle at the bottom of the nail polish.
At one point, it looked like the nail polish had a light pink/purple hue but once I stopped shaking/mixing it the pigment settled at the bottom of the bottle.

Subject: cochineal lip balm recreation using leftover lip balm
Weather: 75º F (outside) - 70º F (indoors)
Materials:
Procedure:
Observation:
After using a lot of effort to blend the two ingredients, I was left with a very soft and homogenous lip salve. It had a beautiful pink tint and was very creamy. I decided to place this mixture on a piece of parchment paper and placed it in the freezer in order to make it harder and see the final result.

Very similar to the previous recreation, but using a little less effort while blending the two ingredients, I was left with a very soft and homogenous lip salve. It had a beautiful purplish tint and was very creamy. I decided to place this mixture on a piece of parchment paper and placed it in the freezer in order to make it harder and see the final result.

Weather: 75º F (outside) - 70º F (indoors)

Observation:
Very similar to the previous recreations, while mixing the two ingredients I immediately noticed the texture becoming liquified. It didn’t take long until I had completely blended the two items and needed to place the mixture in plastic wrap paper and then put it in the freezer in order to make it solid and see the final result.

This mixture was very hard, the beeswax took a while to blend and I doubt it would have a pleasant texture on someone’s lips. The color was pale purple and the texture was very hard. I placed it in parchment paper and on the freezer to see if there were any changes in color or viscosity.

After using the cochineal pigment powder with the nail polish, I decided to refine the pigment by placing it on a sheet of parchment paper and evenly using a rolling pin a couple of times. |

Final note:
Even though the lip balm recreations were easy enough, did not require a lot of effort and came out with beautiful colors I did not try them on my lips because I wasn’t sure of the toxicity of the cochineal powder. I tried them with my fingers, used them on the back of my hand to test density, softness and see if they could pass as a regular lip balm - they all passed the test except for the beeswax one.
I have to admit, the pigment was not fully blended. I could see some particles of pigment (grains) when I tried the lip balm recreations on my hand.
